Rylen Wax after winning U17 Men's Freestyle World Team Trials Title at U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada
Rylen Wax (Chillicothe, Ohio/Beast Mode Wrestling) has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.
Wax claimed two titles over the weekend at the USA Wrestling Ohio 16U & Junior State Championships. En route to freestyle and Greco-Roman titles in the 16U division, he did not allow a point across his eight matches.
In freestyle, Wax recorded a trio of 10-0 technical falls all within the first minute of his matches. Over his five Greco-Roman contests, Wax highlighted his unbeaten weekend with a 10-0 technical in just 28 seconds in the fourth round of his round robin bracket. He collected a victory via medical forfeit, and his final three wins were 8-0 contests.
The two state titles for Wax come after he claimed two spots on the U17 World Team at the U.S. Open Championships.
He swept the best-of-three series during the U17 Greco-Roman World Team Trials. Then, during the U17 freestyle tournament in Las Vegas, in the third and decisive match, Wax erased a four-point deficit with two seconds to go with an ankle pick as time expired to collect a 10-9 decision and earn the spot on Team USA.
Earlier this year, Wax finished as a double gold medalist at the U17 Pan American Championships. He now has three age-group Pan American titles and four total age-group Pan American medals.
Wax is now set to represent the U.S. at the U17 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, July 27-August 2.
