MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – Midwest powers and the top three overall seeds in the men’s freestyle tournament, Illinois, Indiana Gold and Wisconsin Red, all went 4-0 on Friday at the Baird Center.
The trio all won their respective pools and started the Gold/Silver Bracket with decisive victories.
Top-seeded Illinois came out on top of Pool A following a 43-24 win over Minnesota Blue in the first-place match. Illinois ran away with the match late, winning the last six bouts in a row. Of Illinois’ 11 match wins, seven came by technical fall.
In Pool B, No. 2-seeded Indiana Gold held off a late charge from Oklahoma Blue to collect the 34-29 victory. With the dual narrowly split, eight wins for Indiana Gold and seven for Oklahoma Blue, Indiana Gold’s six bonus victories were the deciding factor to claim the top spot in the pool.
Third-seeded Wisconsin Red used a run of five-straight wins over the final six matches to upend Pennsylvania Blue, 37-27, for the Pool C win. Wisconsin Red recorded six bonus wins in the dual, highlighted by a quintet of shutout victories.
In a battle between No. 4-seeded Iowa and No. 5-seeded Ohio Scarlet, Ohio Scarlet notched the upset, 35-26. Five tech fall victories for Ohio Scarlet keyed the victory for the top spot in Pool D.
After the conclusion of the preliminary pools, the top eight teams that advanced to the Gold/Silver Bracket included Illinois, Ohio Scarlet, Pennsylvania Blue and Oklahoma Blue in Pool A and Indiana Gold, Wisconsin Red, Iowa and Minnesota Blue in Pool B.
Illinois (45-16), Indiana Gold (44-24) and Wisconsin Red (43-23) kept their unbeaten marks alive with round one victories. Pennsylvania Blue was the only pool runner-up to win the first round of the Gold/Silver Bracket with a 32-30 win over Ohio Scarlet.
