WESLEY CHAPEL, Florida – Day one of the men’s freestyle competition is complete at the 2026 14U National Duals in Wesley Chapel, Florida. After two sessions of dual action, California Gold, Maryland, Iowa and Pennsylvania Blue emerged as preliminary pool champions and secured spots in Friday’s Gold/Silver pool, where the tournament title will be decided.

In Pool A, California Gold narrowly defeated Minnesota, 38-34, behind a barrage of technical falls in seven of its nine victories. Technical falls by James Hin (110), Samuel Briggs (115) and Ethan Escobar (120) fueled wins in six of the first eight bouts and staked California Gold to a 24-8 lead. Minnesota mounted a late charge with pins from Luke Kelly (175), Hank Gutormson (225), plus a technical fall from Jacob Graber (75), but California Gold held on to preserve the four-point win.

Maryland controlled Pool B from start to finish and closed the day with a 56-18 victory over Kansas in the championship dual. Edward Encarnacion III (100), Justin Wildy, Jr. (126) and Brody Clemons (132) each recorded pins to pace the lineup. Maryland dropped just four matches against Kansas and produced either technical falls or pins in nine of its 13 wins.

Iowa pulled out a 39-34 win over Wisconsin in Pool C, despite Wisconsin claiming nine individual victories. Brooks Dolmage (120) and John Hirsch (132) delivered clutch pins in the championship dual to swing the showdown in Iowa’s favor. Wisconsin closed strong with wins in the final three matches, but Iowa’s advantage on bonus points proved too much to overcome.

Pennsylvania Blue cruised through Pool D, closing the session with a 55-18 win over Michigan Blue in the championship dual. Holding a 12-9 advantage after five matches, Evan Becker (115) earned an 8-5 decision that ignited 10 straight wins for Pennsylvania Blue. At 88 pounds, Maddox Plambeck provided the exclamation point, sealing the dual and the pool title for Pennsylvania Blue.

Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan Blue will join Thursday’s pool champions in the Gold/Silver pool, where the overall champion and top eight teams will be decided. Minnesota defeated New Jersey, 46-33, to earn second place in Pool A, while Illinois beat Kansas, 43-32, for second in Pool B. Wisconsin (Pool C) and Michigan Blue (Pool D) finished second in their respective pools after beating their true-second opponents in bracket play.

Color pools in the men’s freestyle division begin Friday at 8 a.m. ET. A complete schedule is available at usawrestlingevents.com.
