Shannon Williams-Yancey is one of the pioneers of women’s wrestling in the United States, helping elevate the sport internationally while opening doors for future generations of female wrestlers.


A four-time World silver medalist, Williams-Yancey represented the United States at seven World Championships and ranked among the world’s best throughout the 1990s. She reached the World Championship finals in 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997, while also earning two fourth-place finishes and one fifth-place finish.


Williams-Yancey was a six-time World Team Trials champion and four-time U.S. National champion. She won Pan American Championship gold medals in 1993 and 1998 and captured three Klippan Open titles in Sweden. In 1994, USA Wrestling named her Women’s Wrestler of the Year, and she became the first female wrestler featured on the cover of USA Wrestler magazine.


The daughter of a wrestler, Williams-Yancey competed on the boys wrestling team at Chaffey High School in California at a time when opportunities for girls in the sport were limited. She later trained with male wrestlers from Lassen Junior College and Chico State while preparing for international competition.


Beyond her success as an athlete, Williams-Yancey made an impact as a coach and mentor. She served as an assistant coach for the 1999 U.S. Women’s World Championship team, the first women’s team title in American history, and later coached at both Wooster High School in Nevada and Thousand Oaks High School in California.


An original female member of the Sunkist Kids wrestling club, Williams-Yancey also served on USA Wrestling’s Board of Directors and has remained a lifelong advocate for women’s wrestling. The California girls wrestling event known as the Williams Cup was named in her honor.


For her international achievements, pioneering contributions, and lifelong dedication to women’s wrestling, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame proudly welcomes Shannon Williams-Yancey as a Distinguished Member.
