Brady Koontz leads Greco-Roman trio into medal round at Hungary Ranking Series event

Brady Koontz has his hand raised after his semifinal victory, 6-0, over Billy Sullivan at the 2026 U.S. Open Championships
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Brady Koontz leads three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers into the medal rounds at the 2026 Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial in Budapest, Hungary. Koontz will contend for the 55 kg gold medal, while Max Nowry and Aden Attao will each compete for bronze at 55 kg and 130 kg, respectively.
Koontz concluded the opening session 2-0 after starting the day with an 8-3 decision over Nowry in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Artiom Deleanu of Moldova in the semifinals and nearly closed the match in the opening period after building an 8-1 lead. Koontz held his composure in the final three minutes, despite surrendering four points, to secure his berth in the gold medal match against Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Botirov, the reigning Asian Championships gold medalist.
After a 2-0 defeat to Hungary’s Laszlo Darabos in his opener, Aden Attao advanced to repechage, where he faced Georgia’s Luka Gabisonia. Gabisonia scored the first four points, but Attao stormed back with 13 unanswered points for a technical fall. He will now face Finland’s Konsta Maeenpaeae for bronze, seeking to avenge Maeenpaeae’s 9-9 quarterfinal win over Cohlton Schultz on criteria.
Despite his setback in the 55 kg quarterfinals, Nowry remains in the medal hunt and will wrestle Deleanu for bronze.
Sunday’s final session, featuring all three U.S. medal matches, begins at 6 p.m. local time/noon ET.
