Brady Koontz earns silver to close Greco-Roman competition at the Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial

Brady Koontz flexes in his 55 kg match at the 2026 Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial
BUDAPEST, Hungary – The 2026 Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial concluded Sunday in Budapest, Hungary, with six Greco-Roman weight classes contested. Brady Koontz earned the lone medal of the day for the U.S., taking silver at 55 kg. Max Nowry and Aden Attao closed the medal round in fifth place in the 55 kg and 130 kg, respectively.
Koontz advanced to the 55 kg gold-medal match with two wins in preliminary action, including victories over teammate Nowry and Moldova’s Artiom Deleanu. In the final, he faced Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Botirov. Early in the bout, Koontz was put down in par terre, and Botirov capitalized with two gutwrenches to build a 5-0 lead at the break. Koontz got on the board in the second period when Botirov was ordered to par terre, but could not erase the deficit in a 5-1 defeat.
Nowry brought early pressure in his bronze-medal match against Deleanu, locking up two headlocks that Deleanu defended. Deleanu took a 1-0 lead into the break and pulled away in the second period for a 5-0 victory.
At 130 kg, Attao battled Finland’s Konsta Maeenpaeae in a physical bronze-medal match. Maeenpaeae scored first after a par terre chance to lead 1-0 at intermission. Attao evened the score in the second period, but could not convert when Maeenpaeae was placed in par terre. A late snap down from Maeenpaeae made it 3-1, and he held that margin to the final whistle.
The U.S. Greco-Roman contingent finished sixth in the final team standings with 61 points and two medals: Koontz’s silver at 55 kg and a bronze from Beka Melelashvili at 87 kg.
