Abigail Nette, Reese Larramendy and Jennifer Page will contend for gold at Hungary Ranking Series Event

BUDAPEST, Hungary – The U.S. sent four women’s freestyle athletes to the medal rounds after the opening session of day three at the Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial Ranking Series event in Budapest, Hungary. Abigail Nette and Alexis Janiak will contend for gold and bronze, respectively, at 59 kg, while Reese Larramendy and Jennifer Page will meet for gold at 65 kg.

The 65 kg finals will feature an All-American showdown, as Larramendy and Page cruised through the preliminary rounds. Page secured her finals spot with three wins: a 3-2 decision over Chile’s Virginia Jimenez Fernandez, a forfeit over Kazakhstan’s Kyzzhibek Zharkynbayeva and a 4-2 decision over Kyrgyzstan’s Gulnura Tashtanbekova in the semifinals. Larramendy advanced to the championship match with a 6-4 win over Azerbaijan’s Birgul Soltanova in the quarterfinals and a pin over Canada’s Miki Rowbottom in the semifinals.

Larramendy and Page met earlier this year at the Senior World Team Trials Challenge, where Page pinned Larramendy in the semifinals.

Nette advanced to the 59 kg finals after two dominant performances in the preliminary rounds. She opened with a 9-0 win over Janiak in the quarterfinals, then earned a fall over Mariia Vynnyk of Ukraine at the 4:15 mark in the semifinals. Nette has yet to allow a point on the day and will now face Neha of India, a three-time age-group World medalist, in the championship match.

Despite her setback to Nette in the opening match, Janiak advanced to the medal round, where she will face Vynnyk, the silver medalist at the 2025 World Championships and the reigning European champion, for bronze.

Adaugo Nwachukwu closed out her tournament with a 1-2 record. She opened with a 13-2 technical fall over Hungary’s Eniko Elekes, then dropped a 6-2 decision to Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Canada and nearly mounted a comeback in repechage before falling 12-7 to Norway’s Grace Bullen.

Otto Black and Joel Adams were the only Greco-Roman competitors for the U.S. on Friday, and neither advanced to the medal rounds. Black won a 5-1 decision over Moldova’s Valentin Petic in the round of 16 before narrowly losing 2-1 to Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelrehim in the quarterfinals. He was then pulled into repechage, where he fell 10-0 to Australia’s Tsuchika Shimoyamadaa. Adams dropped his tournament opener, 8-0, to Russia’s Danil Grigorev.

Friday’s second session, featuring the U.S. women’s freestyle medal matches, begins at 6 p.m. local time/noon ET.
