Samara Chavez secures silver medal; Dustin Plott earns bronze on day two of 2026 Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial

BUDAPEST, Hungary – The U.S. added two more medals on day two of the 2026 Polyák Imre, Varga János & Kozma István Memorial in Budapest. Samara Chavez finished the women’s freestyle 50 kg bracket with a 3-1 record, earning silver, while Dustin Plott (92 kg) earned bronze in the men’s freestyle competition.
Against China’s 2024 Olympic bronze medalist, Ziqi Feng, Chavez attacked quickly and earned a takedown, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening minute. Feng swiftly leveled the score with a takedown of her own that nearly resulted in a fall. Although Chavez avoided the fall, Feng turned five gutwrenches to conclude the match 12-2 in her favor.
On her way to the silver medal, Chavez scored a technical fall over a fifth-place finisher from the 2024 Olympic Games, Ukraine’s Oksana Livach, and two pins, marking a strong showing in her first international competition since 2023.
Plott found the scoreboard first with back-to-back pushouts in the opening period, carrying a 2-0 lead into the final three minutes. He then converted a single leg into a takedown and two turns, building an 8-0 lead before a final takedown secured a technical fall, 10-0, for Plott. Plott’s bronze is his second medal at a 2026 Ranking Series event, following his gold at the Zagreb Open in February.
Mason Parris moved to the bronze medal match at 125 kg and finished fifth after defaulting out of the tournament due to injury.
Women’s freestyle competition continues Friday, with five athletes in action: Abigail Nette and Alexis Janiak at 59 kg; Adaugo Nwachukwu at 62 kg; and Jennifer Page and Reese Larramendy at 65 kg. Otto Black (67 kg) and Joel Adams (77 kg) will open Greco-Roman competition Friday. Qualification rounds for both styles begin at 10:30 a.m. local time/4:30 a.m. ET.
