Payton Jacobson Named USA Wrestling Athlete Of The Week

Payton Jacobson (Marquette, Mich./New York AC) has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.

2024 Olympian Jacobson captured silver at the Benur Pashayan International Tournament in Yerevan, Armenia. Heading into the gold medal match, Jacobson outscored his foes 25-2 and notched technical falls in his first two matches.

To start the tournament, Jacobson won a 9-1 contest against Vasili Buhlak of Belarus, who competed at the 2023 U23 World Championships. In the quarterfinals, Jacobson shutout five-time age-group World competitor Adam Gardziola of Poland, 8-0.

Facing U23 World silver medalist and World Military champion Gevorg Tadevosyan of Armenia in the semifinals, Jacobson controlled the match from the start and earned an 8-1 decision. The lone point he allowed in the match came off a lost challenge.

In the gold medal bout, Jacobson lost a tight 3-1 affair to U20 World silver medalist Yasin Yazdi.

Jacobson represented Team USA at the U23 and Senior World Championships last year. At Senior Worlds, he posted a seventh-place finish and then won bronze at the U23 World Championships.
