Wieser, Grote medal in women’s freestyle to cap 30th annual Poland Open

WARSAW, Poland – The U.S. women’s freestyle team picked up a pair of medals on Saturday, silver from Precious Wieser and bronze from Skylar Grote, to end its run at the 2026 Poland Open.

Wieser and Grote were entered in a five-woman round-robin bracket at 72 kg—Wieser finished with a 3-1 record, while Grote posted a 2-2 mark. Both women lost to eventual champion Wiktoria Chołuj of Poland, Wieser by fall and Grote by 5-1 decision.

The two medalists met in the first round, with Wieser collecting a 2-2 criteria win. Grote took the early 1-0 lead with a step out 52 seconds into the match. Wieser evened it up with a step out at the two-minute mark. Grote added a shot clock point halfway through the second period. Wieser scored the winning step out with 10 seconds left in the match. This was a much closer contest than the 14-2 Wieser win from the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in May.

It is the second international medal of the year for Wieser, who was a gold medalist at the Pan American Championships held in Coralville, Iowa, last May. She was runner-up at both the U.S. Open and World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Grote has competed sparingly this season. This is her first international outing and medal of the year. She was fifth place at the U.S. Open and third place at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Also competing for the U.S. was Shenita Lawson, who turned in a 1-2 record at 76 kg, falling outside the medal rounds.

The U.S. women finished with seven medalists this week in Poland. In addition to today’s medal haul, Amanda Martinez (57 kg) won gold, Sage Mortimer (50 kg), Macey Kilty (62 kg) and Nina Makem (65 kg) earned silver, and Sydney Petzinger (53 kg) was bronze.
