The Crucible on the Mat: How the Marine Corps and USA Wrestling Forge Tomorrow’s Leaders

Spend enough time around wrestling and certain expectations become familiar: show up prepared, embrace difficult work, and keep going when things don't go your way. Those expectations shape success on the mat, but they can also influence how wrestlers approach challenges long after competition ends.

That mindset is closely aligned with the United States Marine Corps, making its longstanding partnership with USA Wrestling a natural fit between two organizations committed to preparing people for difficult challenges.

Since the partnership began in 2017, Marines have become a familiar presence at some of USA Wrestling's most prominent events. Over time, the relationship has grown beyond visibility at tournaments to include opportunities for Marines to interact directly with wrestlers, coaches, families, and wrestling leaders.

That connection was on display again this summer at the 2026 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota. Now in its eighth year, the Marine Corps' title sponsorship of Junior Nationals continues to anchor the partnership at one of the largest and most recognizable annual gatherings in American wrestling.

Throughout the week, Marines could be seen around the FargoDome talking with athletes and coaches, participating in championship ceremonies, and interacting with families and fans.

“This year’s U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals were a tremendous success and another example of the outstanding partnership between USA Wrestling and the U.S. Marine Corps,” said Bruce Baumgartner, USA Wrestling President. “Our two organizations are committed to providing opportunities for young men and women across the country to showcase strength and courage in the pursuit of excellence.”

One of the most active gathering points was the Marine Corps Coaches Lounge. Away from the competition mats, the lounge gave coaches a place to recharge and connect during a demanding week of wrestling.

Coaches understand that developing a wrestler requires more than teaching technique. It means helping young people learn how to prepare, accept responsibility, overcome disappointment, support teammates, and continue working toward a goal.

Marines bring their own experiences with many of those same principles.

The 2026 Junior Nationals also introduced a new symbol of the partnership: the Marines Battles Won Award, presented to USA Wrestling's national team champions. Throughout portions of the tournament, the championship trophy was displayed inside the FargoDome, giving wrestlers and families an opportunity to see it up close, take photographs, and meet the Marines.

The trophy's name carries meaning in a sport defined by overcoming challenges. For a wrestler, the battles that matter are not limited to the ones that happen under the lights. They include early practice, difficult losses, demanding workouts, injuries, expectations, and the decision to return to the mat and keep improving.

The Battles Won Award gives that shared mindset a visible place within the partnership, connecting the achievement of USA Wrestling's national team champions with the preparation and perseverance required to reach that level.

Wrestling challenges athletes to become disciplined, resilient, and accountable. Coaches challenge them to lead and support their teammates. The Marine Corps asks its Marines to embrace those same qualities in service to something greater than themselves.

Nearly a decade into the partnership, that common ground remains its foundation, creating opportunities for USA Wrestling and the Marine Corps to recognize achievement, strengthen communities, and inspire the next generation to pursue excellence.
