WARSAW, Poland – Brady Koontz and Otto Black added two more medals for the U.S., as Greco-Roman competition concluded at the 69th Wladyslaw Pytlasinski Memorial. Women’s freestyle competition also kicked off at the Poland Open, where Sage Mortimer and Sydney Petzinger earned medals for the U.S.

Koontz was perfect in his 55 kg bracket, winning the lone Greco-Roman gold medal for the U.S. with a 3-0 record. He opened the day with a 2-1 decision over Filip Bartosik of the Czech Republic and closed the round-robin bracket with two dominant wins over Ukrainian opponents. Koontz pinned Koriun Sahradian with 45 seconds remaining in round two and followed with an 8-0 technical fall over Ivan Stefanski in round three.

Black added another bronze medal to the U.S. Greco-Roman contingent, finishing Thursday’s action with a 3-1 record at 67 kg. After a 9-1 victory over Mateusz Szewczuk of Poland in round one, Black earned a 5-1 decision over Tim Eklund Bergfalk of Sweden in round two. He suffered a 7-0 setback to Haavard Joergensen of Norway in round three but rebounded with a 15-5 technical fall over Sweden’s William Ekerot in the bronze-medal match.

Xavier Johnson nearly added another medal for the U.S. at 63 kg, finishing the day with a 2-2 record. Johnson won his first two matches—a 1-1 criteria decision over Algot Gamelius of Sweden in round one and a 7-1 decision over Dominik Partyka of Poland in round two. After a 4-1 loss to Maksym Liu of Ukraine in round three, Johnson advanced to the bronze medal match, where he lost 5-1 to Aleksandrs Jurkjans of Latvia.

Dalton Roberts and Dylan Koontz chipped in top-10 finishes in the 60 kg bracket—Roberts in eighth place and Koontz in 10th place. Jace Koelzer and Rhett Peak were also in action for the U.S. in the 60 kg bracket, while Duncan Nelson competed at 67 kg.

With five competitors finishing in the top 10 on day two, the U.S. Greco-Roman team concluded the tournament in fifth place in the team standings with 165 points. Ukraine topped the team rankings with 492 points, followed by Kyrgyzstan in second with 207 points. Armenia took third with 190 points, while Sweden finished fourth with 169 points.

The U.S. momentum carried into women’s freestyle competition at the Poland Open, where Sage Mortimer earned the team’s first medal—a silver at 50 kg. Mortimer opened the day with a 13-5 decision over Svenja Jungo of Switzerland, a 2024 U20 World bronze medalist. She then pinned Gabija Dilyte of Lithuania, a 2024 Olympian, just 51 seconds into their round-two matchup. Mortimer later dropped a 13-4 decision in the finals to Oksana Livach of Ukraine, another 2024 Olympian and the reigning 50 kg Senior European champion.

Sydney Petzinger finished with a bronze medal for the U.S. after closing the 53 kg bracket with a 2-1 record. In round one, Petzinger stormed back from a 7-1 deficit and secured a pin with two seconds remaining against Mariia Yefremova of Ukraine, a multi-time age-group World champion and the 2026 Senior and U20 European champion. After a 12-2 loss to Annika Wendle of Germany in round two, Petzinger controlled Antonia Valdes Arriagada of Chile and clinched a 7-2 decision in the bronze-medal match.

Mariah Anderson and Alisha Paradise also competed for the U.S. women’s team. Paradise finished seventh at 53 kg with a 1-1 record, while Anderson finished ninth in the 50 kg bracket with a 1-2 record.

Women’s freestyle competition continues on Friday at the Poland Open with the 55 kg, 57 kg, 59 kg, 62 kg, 65 kg and 68 kg brackets. The U.S. will have 10 wrestlers in action, including 2026 U23 World Team member Sara Sterner.
