Michael Boyle celebrates winning gold medal at U20 World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia
Michael Boyle (Columbus, Ohio/Ohio Crazy Goats WC) has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.
Boyle captured the 97 kg U20 World title over the weekend, wrapping up the U20 World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The 17-year-old bonused his way through the field with three tech falls and a pin. Facing 2024 U17 World silver medalist Rodion Sanakoev of Russia for the championship, Boyle broke up a 1-1 contest in the second period with five takedowns to win 12-2 for the gold medal.
To secure his spot in the championship bout, Boyle secured a first-period fall against Azamat Tsarikaev of Belarus.
In his opening round match, Boyle shut out returning U20 World bronze medalist Samir Dursunov of Kazakhstan, 10-0. Then in the quarterfinals, he posted a 13-2 technical fall over Japan’s Noah Leibowitz, who went on to claim bronze.
Boyle’s gold medal was one of four for the U.S. men’s freestyle squad at the U20 World Championships. Team USA medaled in each of the 10 weight classes to win its third-straight team title with 205 points.
Earlier this year, Boyle won the U20 Pan American title. He bonused his way through the round-robin bracket at the continental championship with three first-period technical falls and a nine-second pin in his final match in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last month.
