Turner wins U20 World bronze, fourth age-group World medal

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia – A fourth age-group World medal is headed back to Chicago as two-time U17 World champion Morgan Turner wrestled her way onto the 50 kg podium at the U20 World Championships on Wednesday with controlled aggression and determination.

Turner rebounded from her quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Yuu Katsume of Japan with two shutout technical falls to capture a bronze medal in women’s freestyle. She put on a five-takedown clinic to blank Josephine Wrensch of Germany, before posting an 11-0 drubbing on 2026 U20 Pan American silver medalist Kayla Batres of Guatemala in the bronze medal match.

The medal effort in Bratislava gives Turner her first U20 World medal to go along with three from the U17 level. She won U17 World titles in 2023 and 2025, plus a U17 World bronze in 2024. The work isn’t done—Turner will represent Team USA at both the U23 and Senior World Championships in October.

Coming in fifth place for the U.S. women was Taylor Whiting at 53 kg. She was upended 10-0 in the bronze medal match by Yuxuan Li of China, who is a two-time Senior Asian silver medalist. Whiting was taken down early and caught in a tight gutwrench that ended the match. She earned a notable repechage win over current U20 and U23 Asian champion Muskan of India just to make the bronze medal round.

Adding seventh-place team points to the U.S. tally was Gretchen Donally at 72 kg. Donally dropped a 4-3 contest to eventual bronze medalist Khrystyna Demchuk of Ukraine in yesterday’s quarterfinals, and wasn’t given a repechage opportunity.  

At the conclusion of women’s freestyle group one, Team USA sits in third place overall with 33 points. Japan is out to the early lead with 54 points. Russia is in second place with 35 points. Five countries have hit the 30-point mark so far. The team race picture will clear up after tomorrow’s group two results come in.

The action continues from A4 Studio at 10 a.m. local time on Thursday with the women’s freestyle group two (55-62-65-76 kg) repechage, plus the women’s freestyle group three (57-59-68 kg) and men’s freestyle group one (61-86 kg) qualification rounds. Bratislava, Slovakia, is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
