Adam Coon and Cohlton Schultz battle in the first bout in the best-of-three championships series during the 2026 Senior Greco-Roman World Team Trials
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A pair of pins highlighted Saturday morning’s Round One finals matches at the 2026 Senior Greco-Roman World Team Trials.
To lead things off, World/Olympic Team mainstay Kamal Bey (WCAP) reversed an early turn attempt by Fritz Schierl and settled in for the fall at 82 kg.
Two weights later, Timothy Young (Army WCAP) found success in a similar fashion.
Trailing 5-2 late in the first period to Arian Khosravy – a surprise finalist as the #25 seed – Young stepped over a gut wrench attempt by his opponent and managed to secure the fall with just three seconds left before the intermission.
The other two finals during Group B action both featured matchups between athletes with previous World/Olympic experience.
At 87 kg, the returning World Teamer at the weight – Payton Jacobson – was bested by last year’s 82 kg rep, Beka Melelashvili (New York AC).
Melelashvili – a former U23 World silver medalist – took advantage of his opportunity in par terre, turning Jacobson in the first period and then preventing a turn of Jacobson’s own to seal the 3-1 decision.
And up at 130 kg, familiar foes Cohlton Schultz (New York AC/Arizona) and Adam Coon staged another titanic clash.
This time, Schultz – last year’s World Teamer at the weight – earned a 4-3 victory over the 2024 Olympian.
An early head pinch helped stake Schultz to a 4-0 lead at the break, and he mostly held serve from there – with a last-second takedown by Coon cutting the final margin to a single point.
Round Two of the Championship Finals will begin tonight at 6:00 p.m. PT – followed immediately by Round Three matches (if necessary).
