Metcalf Named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week

Brent Metcalf (Davison, Mich.) has been named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week for the week of April 27-May 3. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Metcalf, a junior at Davison high school, captured the Greco-Roman and freestyle titles at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. at the FILA Junior National Championships last weekend in Lincoln, Neb. In Greco-Roman, Metcalf dominated his four opponents, outscoring them 29-1 on his way to the crown. In freestyle, it was more of the same, as he outscored his five opponents 48-5. In the semifinals, he downed Alex Tsirtsis, who was one of the top recruits in the nation this year, 3-1. Tsirtsis has signed a National Letter of Intent with Iowa. In the finals, Metcalf defeated Univ. of Minnesota freshman Willy Holst 14-4. For his efforts, Metcalf was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the freestyle portion. In three seasons at Davison High School, Metcalf is 167-0 with three Michigan individual state titles. He is expected to be one of the most highly sought recruits for the 2004-05 signing year.
