Fullhart Named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week

Lee Fullhart (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) has been named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week for the week of April 6-12. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Fullhart was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2004 U.S. Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. this past weekend. Fullhart defeated 2003 World silver medalist and three-time U.S. Nationals champion Cael Sanderson 5-2 in the finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. to win his first national crown. It was the third consecutive year that Fullhart and Sanderson met in the U.S. Nationals finals. "I fight (the crowd) every match because he is the guy everyone wants to win, but I've done everything right to prepare for this," Fullhart said after the match. "I train harder than anyone else in the world." Fullhart won six matches en route to the title. He outscored his six opponents 42-5. In the quarterfinals, Fullhart downed two-time NCAA champion Greg Jones 7-1 before defeating 2001 World silver medalist Brandon Eggum 3-1 in the semifinals. This was the first U.S. Nationals title for Fullhart, who was a four-time NCAA All-American at the Univ. of Iowa (1996-99). Fullhart is currently a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
