Lewis Named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week

Oklahoma State 165-pounder Tyrone Lewis (El Reno, Okla.) has been named TheMat.com Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 10-16. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Lewis defeated 2003 NCAA finalist Troy Letters of Lehigh 8-5 in Oklahoma State's 25-12 win over Lehigh on Sunday afternoon. Lewis took control of the match in the second period against Letters, scoring a reversal and two nearfall points to gain a 6-2 advantage. Last year in the 165-pound NCAA semifinals, Letters defeated Lewis 12-7. The win for Lewis helped Oklahoma State extend its dual-match winning streak to 15 and raised the Cowboys' season record to 17-1. With the win, Lewis improved to 28-0 on the season and his career record is now 110-12, moving him into a tie for 15-place on the Oklahoma State all-time wins list with Eric Guerrero. Lewis is also ranked No. 1 in every Division I individual poll. Lewis is a three-time NCAA All-American, placing fifth in 2001 and 2003, and third in 2002. He is an Education major at Oklahoma State. THEMAT.COM ATHLETES OF THE WEEK FOR 2004 February 10-16 - Tyrone Lewis (El Reno, Okla.)
