Rulon Gardner receives one of USA Today's 2000 Sports Awards

Olympic gold-medalist Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner (Afton, Wyo./Sunkist Kids) was among the star athletes selected for one of USA Today's 2000 Sports Awards. The sports staff of USA Today presented its season-ending awards in its December 29, 2000 sports section. A total of 28 awards were presented, with each award having an acting theme. According to USA Today: "Best Original Score: Rulon Gardner winning wrestling gold medal 1-0." Eight of the award winners were depicted in a photograph, including Gardner doing a cartwheel after his victory in Sydney. The caption read: "Golden performance: The USA's Rulon Gardner cartwheels in joy after defeating vaunted Russian wrestler Alexander Karelin." Gardner has received a number of major honors since his shocking victory in Sydney on September 27. He was chosen by his peers to carry the U.S. flag in the Closing Ceremony at the Olympic Games. Gardner was elected as the 2000 USOC SportsMan of the Year, only the second wrestler so honored. He placed sixth in the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year balloting, and was selected to The Sporting News' 100 Most Powerful list in sports.
