Luther's Brett Stender named Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week

Brett Stender of Luther, Brett Smith of Buena Vista and Jamie Dalbey of Coe were selected Monday as Iowa Conference Athletes of the Week in wrestling, men*s basketball and women*s basketball, respectively. Stender, an All-America senior heavyweight from Donohue, pinned Randy Fulsaas of the University of Iowa last Friday to prevent the NCAA Division I national champion Hawkeyes from posting a pair of shutouts against Iowa Conference competition in a double dual in Maquoketa. Iowa defeated both Luther and Loras in the meet. Stender also defeated Pete Peterson of the Wisconsin-Eau Claire 16-4 last Tuesday to help the Norse record a 26-15 dual victory. Stender (2-0) was the Iowa Conference runner-up last season and placed third in the NCAA Division III Championships. A three-member committee of sports information directors from Iowa Conference colleges selects the Players of the Week based on nominations open to any sports information director in the conference.
