Upper Iowa Wrestler Captures Winter's First IIAC Athlete Of Week Honors



Wrestler Cliff Thompson of Upper Iowa and a pair of Wartburg basketball players Holly Mohs and Mike Pipho were named the first Athletes of the Week for the winter sports season in the Iowa Conference on Monday. Thompson, a returning All-American at 197 pounds, won the title at 197 pounds Saturday at the Augsburg Open in Minneapolis. Thompson defeated Matt Morris of Wisconsin-La Crosse 5-3, Joe Bryce of North Dakota State 7-3 and Kevin Rasmussen of Augsburg 5-3 to earn a spot in the finals. He then beat Lee Hiltner of North Dakota State, a former junior-college All-American, 4-2 in the championship match. Thompson is a junior from Randleman, N.C.
