Burroughs, Lampe, Anthony weigh in and receive draws at World Championships in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Three U.S. wrestlers, one in men’s freestyle and two in women’s freestyle have weighed in and received their draws for the third day of the World Wrestling Championships on Wednesday.

The final men’s freestyle athlete to compete this year is 2012 Olympic champion and 2011 World champion Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg/163 lbs.

Burroughs drew Gamid Dzhalilov of Tajikistan. Should he win that match, he may face the Russian national champion Kakhaber Khubezhty, a 2006 Junior World champion, in his second bout.

Burroughs has a 60-match winning streak on the Senior level coming into this event. He was a two-time NCAA champion for Nebraska, winning the Hodge Trophy as the nation’s top college wrestler as a Senior.

“He had a great summer. He wrestled 27 matches this year, more matches than he had the last few years. His preparation is great. He is in excellent shape right now. He handled the injury situation quite well and got through it. He is excited about competing,” said U.S. coach Mark Manning.

The two lightest women’s wrestling weight classes will see action on Wednesday, with U.S. entries Alyssa Lampe at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Victoria Anthony at 51 kg/112.25 lbs.

Lampe, a 2012 World bronze medalist, will be competing in her third Senior World Championships. She will face Nirmala Devi of India, a two-time Commonwealth Championships champion.

Lampe attended Northern Michigan before becoming a resident-athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the world in the latest FILA World rankings.

“She expects to leave here with that gold medal around her neck,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner. “She will have to fight hard. There will be some battles in her matches where she’ll have to come through. I feel very confident about Alyssa Lampe.”

Anthony is competing in her first Senior World Championships. Her first-round draw is Valya Trandeva of Bulgaria, who was fifth in 2010 University World Championships.

She was a two-time Junior World champion. Anthony has won three WCWA women’s national titles for Simon Fraser University.

“Vickie has a lot of experience at the Senior level. She’s a two-time World champion and she knows how to win at a championship level. She has high expectations going in. She needs to be ready to battle. There are tough people at her weight class,” said Steiner.

Steiner looks forward to seeing his team in action.

“We had very good training and are ready to go. The women have high expectations. There are tough competitors and tough weight classes. You have to be ready for the battle, to scrap for every point. If we are ready to do that, I feel good about this team,” said Steiner.
