Four repeat as champions at Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals, as Alo wins OW award

Teshya Alo recieves the FILA Cadet Outstanding Wrestler award from fellow Hawaiian Clarissa Chun, a World champion and Olympic medalist.

LAKELAND, Fla. – Four athletes repeated as champions at the FILA Cadet National Championships, and earned a repeat trip to the FILA Cadet World Championships with victories on Saturday.

Cadets are athletes 15-17 years old. Winners in the FILA Cadet World weight classes earned a trip to the World Championships in Zrenjanin, Serbia in August.

Repeating as the champion at 49 kg / 108 lbs. was Cadence Lee of Dave Schultz-Titans Wrestling, who won her best-of-three series over Kaitlin Fitzpatrick of WOW, with pins in 1:13 and 0:33.

Repeating as a champion with her victory at 70 kg / 154.25 lbs. was Alyssa LaFrancis of the No Mercy School of Wrestling. She swept her championship series over Autumn Rux of Michigan Women’s Wrestling, winning bout one 2-2 and bout two, 4-3, 3-0. Last year, LaFrances was the champion at 65 kg/143.25 lbs.

Repeating as champions for the third straight time were the Doi sisters of SD Hot Beaches, Marina at 38 kg/83.75 lbs. and Regina at 40 kg/88 lbs. Both were uncontested. Last year at the Cadet World Championships, Marina was a World Champion and Regina placed fifth. In 2011, Marina won a Cadet World silver medal.

Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler award was Teshya Alo of Titan Mercury WC/Ku Lokahi, who defeated returning FILA Cadet World Team member Kayla Miracle of Team Indiana in the final series at 56 kg/123.25 lbs. Alo won the first match in three periods, 5-0, 3-5, 8-0, then closed it out in two periods in bout two, 1-0, 3-2.

At last year’s FILA Cadet Nationals, Miracle beat Alo in the pool competition and went on to take the gold. However, Alo defeated Miracle in the pool competition of the Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D. and went on to take the title.

Winning her second national title of this year so far was Becka Leathers of Choctaw Wrestling, the champion at 60 kg/132 lbs. Leathers defeated Maya Nelson of Rino Sport Galleri, 1-0, 2-2 and 4-0, 4-2. Leathers also won the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals on the Junior level in March.

Winning her first Body Bar FILA Cadet Nationals title was Gabrielle Garcia of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, who defeated Arian Carpio of the FW Spartans in the finals in two straight. Garcia got a pin in bout in 57 seconds, then won bout two by a 4-0, 2-2 margin. Last year, Garcia was a champion in the Schoolgirl division at the Body Bar Nationals.

Needing three matches to claim the title at 46 kg/101.25 lbs. and take a World Team berth was Harriet Symington of Maryland. She lost her first match to Devyn Johnson of Minnesota by pin in the second period. However, Symington rallied for two straight wins, taking bout two by pin in the second period, then taking the series with a 3-0, 4-1 win in bout three.

Also earning a Cadet World Team berth was Alexis Porter of New York, who defeated Hannah Gladden in two straight matches at 65 kg / 143.25 lbs. Porter won the first match 2-0, 7-0, then closed it out with a 1-0, 5-1 win.

The champions in the two weight classes which are not at the Cadet World Championships were Taylor Rosario at 78 kg / 170 lbs. and Nadine Fiege at 84 kg / 185 lbs.

Those placing second in the tournament earned a spot on the U.S. Pan American Cadet team, which will compete in Medellin, Colombia in August. There were two true second place matches held for a spot on this team, which were necessary when the runner-up and third place winners did not wrestle earlier. Winning these two spots were Emily Pinson of Mid-State Wrestling Academy at 49 kg / 108 lbs. and Jessika Rottier of Pulaski at 60 kg / 132.25 lbs.

On Sunday, the Body Bar FILA Junior Nationals will be held, featuring the top 17-20 year olds in the nation.
