LAS VEGAS – Missouri’s Matt Schmitt continues to stockpile momentum and victories at USA Wrestling events.
Schmitt took charge right away in sweeping Washington’s Zac Hanson to win a Western Junior Regional Greco-Roman title on Wednesday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Schmitt prevailed 4-0, 1-0 in the 100-pound finals.
“The key was getting on him early and getting to my attacks,” Schmitt said. “That’s a big, long, strong kid. I just felt like if I did my stuff he wasn’t going to be able to beat me. In the second period, I got my takedown. I got a little tired toward the end, but I knew if I controlled the wrist and held my position he wouldn’t be able to take me down.”
Schmitt placed third at the Cadet Nationals in Greco and freestyle in Fargo, N.D. in 2012.
Schmitt said he also plans to compete in the Western Junior Regional freestyle tournament, which starts on Thursday in Las Vegas.
“I love being out here in Vegas,” Schmitt said. “It’s an awesome experience wrestling here. It reminds me of Fargo, being able to wrestle on the big stage.”
Colorado’s Kyndall Rutz was named Outstanding Wrestler after rallying to defeat Nevada’s Sean Cannon. Rutz dropped the first period 3-0 before rallying to win 6-5, 3-2 in the final two periods.
Utah’s Roy Nash rolled to the title at 220 pounds, winning by a 13-second fall and an 8-1, 8-0 technical fall.
Nash won Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman and freestyle this past July in Fargo.
Michigan’s Cole Weaver swept Missouri’s Malacai Collins 3-1, 7-0 in the 126 finals. Weaver won a Cadet Nationals Greco title in 2012 and placed second in freestyle in Fargo.
