Foreign athletes win 13 golds and five U.S. athletes repeat at Veterans Greco Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev.

One of the key additions to the Veterans Nationals this year was a large team from Russia, to go along with a team from Ukraine which has been here before. It added a true international flavor to the competition this year.

The foreign talent went home with 13 of the gold medals awarded in Greco-Roman on Wednesday.

In Div. B, the international champions included Aleksandr Serebrinnikov of Russia at 63 kg, Ievgenii Vasyliev of Ukraine at 85 kg and Sergey Ustimov of Russia at 97 kg.

In Div. C, international champions featured Evgeny Didenko of Russia at 69 kg/152 lbs., Aleksei Golubin of Russia at 85 kg and Viktor Hunmadarasz of Ukraine at 130 kg.

In Div. D., Victor Ilyenko of Russia at 58 kg, Rafik Khamidullin of Russia at 63 kg, Andrei Semanov of Russia at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. and Alexander Pisakin of Russia at 130 kg

In Div. E, champions from overseas were Victor Chirkov of Russia at 58 kg, Igor Korolkov of Ukraine at 69 kg and Radik Khamidullin of Russia at 63 kg

That didn’t mean that many of the top U.S. wrestlers from past Veterans National events did not have success. In fact, five of the champions in Greco-Roman repeated from last year’s event held in Tucson, Ariz.

Repeat champions in Div. A were Ryan Vottero of Air Force WC at 69 kg and Andrew Bristow of Dirty Bird WC at 97 kg/211.5 lbs. Repeat champions in Div. B were Jason Goldman of the Jason Goldman of Thorobred WC at 58 kg, Ignacio Ramirezlazos of No Mercy School of Wrestling at 69 kg. A repeat champions in Div. D was Jamey Kasser of Crush WC.

Some of the U.S. champions on Wednesday won big matches over their foreign opponents to get their titles.

At 76 kg in Div. C, American Tony Piva of the Bronco WC beat Igor Ilin of Russia, 2-0, 3-0 in the final. Also at Div. C, Roy Andersen of the Chicago WC beat two Russians on the way to his gold at 97 kg.

In Div. E, a three-athlete roundrobin ended up with three athletes with 1-1 records. The gold went to American Steve Contarino, who had a big win over runner-up Valery Sorokov of Russia, 4-3, 1-1.
