FLASH: Four U.S. men freestylers reach finals of Pan American Championships in Panama

PANAMA CITY, Panama – Four U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers have qualified for the gold-medal finals at the Pan American Championships on Sunday.

Reaching the gold-medal finals are Mark McKnight (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Drew Headlee (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Phil Keddy, Iowa City, Iowa (Hawkeye WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Zach Rey, Hopatcong, N.J. (Lehigh Valley AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

McKnight, who competed in college for Buffalo and Penn State, won three bouts to reach the finals, where he will face Juan Ramirez Beltre of the Dominican Republic.

Headlee, who competed for Pitt, also had three wins in the preliminaries, and has drawn Franklin Maren Castillo of Cuba in the finals.

Keddy, who starred at Iowa, had two wins, including a big semifinal victory over Yuriesku Torreblanco Queralta of Cuba. He draws Tamerlan Tagziev of Canada in the finals.

Rey, a past NCAA champion for Lehigh, had two preliminary wins, and will battle Korey Jarvis of Canada for the title.

Three U.S. athletes will compete for bronze medals: 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott, Stillwater, Okla. (Titan Mercury WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Nick Marable, Columbia, Mo. (Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and David Zabriskie, Bethlehem, Pa. (Lehigh Valley AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. All three lost to Cuban athletes in the semifinal round. Scott and Zabriskie are past NCAA champions, Scott for Oklahoma State and Zabriskie for Iowa State.
