Kennedy, Russell win golds at Guelph Open in Canada

GUELPH, Canada – Two U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers won gold medals at the Guelph Open on Sunday, Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Kellen Russell (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Both train with the Cliff Keen WC at the University of Michigan.

Kennedy finished with a 3-0 record, defeating Canadian Cody Airdrie of Guelph in the finals. He also had wins over Canadians Dylan Galloway and James Mancini.

Kennedy, a star for the Univ. of Illinois as an undergrad, won his second straight international event, after winning the New York AC International in November.

Russell, a two-time NCAA champion for Michigan, also went 3-0. He stopped Canadian Ryan Weicker of Brock in the finals. Other wins were against Canadians Brad Trimble of Brock and Drew Belanger of the Bears.

Two Americans won silver medals, men’s freestyler Kyle Massey (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. and women’s freestyler Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.

Massey finished 3-1 in a five-athlete roundrobin, losing only to eventual champion Korey Jarvis of Guelph.

Pirozhkova, the 2012 World champion at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., finished with a 2-1 record. She dropped her opening match to Ilana Kratysh of Israel.

American Carlene Sluberski (Fredonia, N.Y./Brock WC), who attends college in Canada, won a bronze medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. She dropped her first match to Sam Stewart of UNB, but came back with three straight wins, including a win over Sam Stewart in the bronze-medal match.
