Colt Sponseller named assistant wrestling coach at Edinboro

EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro University Director of Athletics Bruce Baumgartner today announced the appointment of Colt Sponseller as assistant wrestling coach. Sponseller replaces Joey Fendone, who left earlier this summer.

Sponseller is a former All-American and three-time NCAA qualifier (2009, 2010, 2011) while competing for the Ohio State University. He earned All-American honors thanks to a fourth place finish at 165 lbs. the 2011 NCAA Championships. He would finish that season with a 25-7 record, and was the Big Ten runner-up in both 2010 and 2011. In 2010 Sponseller had a 30-7 record and also finish second at the Big Ten Championships. He would end his career with a 105-24 record for the Buckeyes.

In addition to his prowess on the mat, Sponseller was also an excellent student. He was a 2008 NWCA Freshman All-Academic selection, a 2010 and ’11 NWCA All-Academic Team member, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, and a three-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete. In 2012 he was a Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor finalist.

“First and foremost I’m very happy to have someone of his pedigree join our program,” related head coach Tim Flynn. “He’s a great example of what we’re looking for in our student-athletes. He’s a hard worker, a good student, and an All-American. He’s everything we want in our wrestler. We couldn’t have had a better hire.

Sponseller graduated from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, specializing in marketing. In addition to his accomplishments as a Buckeye, he was a University Freestyle National Champion in 2010 and 2011, and a University Freestyle World Team member in 2011.
