UPDATE: New York Athletic Club to host memorial for the late Bill Farrell in New York City, Thursday, Nov. 1

There will be a memorial service in honor of the late wrestling leader Bill Farrell at the New York Athletic Club in New York City, N.Y., on Thursday, November 1 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Anyone who knew Bill Farrell is invited to attend. Farrell served as President of the New York Athletic Club. He was also closely connected with the NYAC wrestling program throughout his life, competing as an athlete, serving as a coach, and serving in numerous other leadership roles.

The New York Athletic Club is located at 180 Central Park South in Manhattan.

There will be some short speeches from leaders who were close to Bill Farrell, along with memorabilia from throughout Bill’s amazing life on display, This part of the program will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Among the speakers will be longtime past NYAC Wrestling Chairman Sonny Greenhalgh, Hall of Fame member Greg Strobel representing USA Wrestling, Jerry Seckler representing the Friends of Long Island Wrestling, wrestling leader Set Agonian, past presidents of the New York Athletic Club and members of the Farrell family.

Cocktails and hors d’ouvres will follow the formal part of the memorial from 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The dress code is business attire, with jackets required and no jeans and no sneakers.

“This is an opportunity for everybody involved in all aspects of his life to come together, celebrate his life and get closure,” said Sonny Greenhalgh.

Bill Farrell passed away at age 82 in June. A funeral service was held in July. This memorial activity has been planned by those close to him to allow all who cared about Bill to get together again.

Farrell was a true visionary and leader who made a major impact on wrestling at all levels.

He was the head coach of the famous 1972 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, which included Olympic champions Dan Gable, Wayne Wells and Ben Peterson. He was an athlete, coach and administrator for the New York Athletic Club, one of the greatest wrestling clubs in the entire world. He was also the top wrestling executive for ASICS America, helping build and expand its wrestling business to become the leading company for wrestling shoes and products in the world.
