2000 NCAA Championships sets ticket record; 2,000 tickets still available



2000 NCAA DIV. I WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ST. LOUIS SURPASSES RECORD FROM MOST ALL-SESSION TICKETS SOLD; APPROXIMATELY 2,000 GENERAL PUBLIC SEATS STILL AVAILABLE

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - St. Louis Sports Commission president, Frank Viverito, and NCAA assistant director of championships, Tim Pavlechko, announced today that the 2000 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, to be held at Kiel Center, March 16-18, in St. Louis, Missouri, has sold the most all-session tickets in the 69-year history of the event.

With 15,015 all-session tickets sold and three-day championship ticket sales over 90,090, the University of Missouri and St. Louis Sports Commission have surpassed the previous record set in 1997 at the University of Northern Iowa when 90,064 people watched the Iowa Hawkeyes win itsí sixth of eight team championships in the 90's.

"With one month until the championships, we already know that the 2000 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis has set a new ticket-sales record," Viverito said. "We are excited about the interest in the event and we are committed to making the 2000 championships one of the most successful ever!"

Dave Martin, associate athletic director at Oklahoma State and chair of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee, is impressed with the city of St. Louis. "We're excited to be taking the championships to St. Louis. With the their past success of hosting several conference and NCAA championships, they've proven themselves to be a first-class site for the participating teams and fans. The 2000 Division I Wrestling Championships promise to be another great event in St. Louis."

Added Tim Pavlechko, "This speaks extremely well for the St. Louis community and college wrestling that this event continues to attract record attendance. We would encourage fans that assumed the event was sold-out to take advantage of the increased seating capacity at the Kiel Center and support these outstanding student-athletes competing on the mats."

The Kiel Center, which will seat 19,854 for wrestling, is the largest venue ever to host the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Approximately 2,000 general public seats are still available.
