U.S. sends strong teams to University World Championships in Finland, October 2-6



The United States will be sending a talented team to the University World Championships in Kourtane, Finland, October 2-6.

The men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman Teams were set during the University Trials in Colorado Springs in late August. The women’s freestyle team was set during the Women’s University National Championships in Oklahoma City in March.

Men’s freestyle starts the action on Oct. 2-3, while women’s freestyle competes Oct. 3-4. Greco-Roman will be held on Oct. 5-6.

Leading the men’s freestyle team are past NCAA champions Jon Reader of Iowa State at 185 pounds, Dustin Kilgore of Kent State at 211 pounds and Tony Nelson of Minnesota at 264 pounds. Reader and Kilgore are members of the Sunkist Kids and Nelson wrestles for the Minnesota Storm. Reader is in his second University World Championships, after placing eighth in 2010.

Competing at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. for Team USA is two-time Junior World Team member Jason Chamberlain of the Bronco WC, including a fifth place finish in 2011. Zach Sanders of the Minnesota Storm, who is at 55 kg/121 lbs. was eighth in 2008 Junior World Championships.

Leading the women’s team is 2012 Senior World champion and 2011 World bronze medalist Adeline Gray of the New York AC. Gray will be moving up in weight and competing at 158.5 pounds, just days after winning her World title in Canada.

Also on the women’s team is two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony of the New York AC at 105 pounds. Others on the team with past Junior World experience include Trinity Plessinger of the Sunkist Kids at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Julia Salata of King College at 67 kg/145.5 lbs.

The men’s Greco-Roman team is led by past Junior World bronze medalist Toby Erikson of the New York AC at 286 pounds, as well as 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials runner-up Max Nowry of the New York AC at 121 pounds. Nowry has placed as high as fifth at the Junior World Championships.
