UPDATE: USA places third in Freestyle World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan

The United States defeated Russia, 5-2 in the third-place match at the Freestyle World Cup on Sunday.

"Team USA finished strong with a very solid 5-2 victory over a scrappy Russian squad. Three years ago we were losing to this Russian team, but we have clearly progressed and once again established Team USA as one of very top teams in the world,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay.

As a nation, the USA finished the event with a strong 4-1 record. Its only loss was in the fourth round of the pool competition on Saturday to Iran by a tight 3-2 margin.

Other U.S. wins came over Japan, Turkey and Georgia.

Winning the team title at the World Cup was Iran, which stopped host Azerbaijan in the finals, 4-3.

"Iran beat Azerbaijan to win the World Cup, and USA was an inch a away from beating Iran. Over the next 13 weeks until London, we plan on closing that inch gap and becoming the best Freestyle wrestling team on the planet,” said Slay.

Going unbeaten the competition for Team USA were Coleman Scott at 60 kg, Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg and Tervel Dlagnev at 120 kg.

"Coleman, Jordan, and Tervel were all World Cup individual Champions. Their confidence, fight, and consistency throughout all five duals fueled our success,” said Slay.
