Andrew Howe named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 17-23

Andrew Howe (Cedar Lake, Ind./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 17-23.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Howe won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the Guelph Open on Saturday in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Howe went 4-0 in the tournament, notching wins over Canada’s Cleo Ncube and Chris Prickett in his final two bouts at 74 kg/163 lbs. Prickett placed second and Ncube third at the recently held Canadian Olympic Trials.

Howe, a three-time All-American and 2010 NCAA champion for Wisconsin, is taking an Olympic redshirt this season. He is training with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club in Ann Arbor, Mich. He has one season of college eligibility remaining.

Howe placed second at the U.S. World Team Trials in 2010 and 2011.

Howe won the Hargobind International earlier this season in Canada.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
