Shirzad Ahmadi named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for October

Shirzad Ahmadi (Coventry, Conn./Veterans Team USA) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Oct. 11-17.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Ahmadi won a gold medal at 63 kg in Div. D at the Veterans World Freestyle Championships in Tirana, Albania on October 15.

It was Ahmadi’s seventh career gold medal at the Veterans World Championships.

Ahmadi defeated U.S. teammate Jack Hornbuckle of Poteau, Okla. in the finals, 2-0, 5-0. He also scored a big win over Shoparov of Russia, 5-0, 1-0.

“Shirzad had another outstanding meet,” said U.S. coach Dan Chaid.

The U.S. claimed five gold medals at the event. Joining Ahmadi as champions were Jamey Kasser of Lewis Center, Ohio at 63 kg in Div. C, Brad Swartz of Auburn, Wash. at 76 kg in Div. D., Anthony Piva of Meridian, Idaho at 58 kg in Div. B. and Jon Tush of Maplewood, N.J. at 74 kg in Div. B.
