KOLAT, MCCOY WIN GOLD MEDALS AT 2000 PAN AMERICAN FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CALI, COLOMBIA, MAY 27, LEADING THE U.S. TO THE TEAM TITLE
Two U.S. wrestlers won gold medals at the 2000 Pan American Championships in Cali, Colombia on May 27th: Cary Kolat (Morgantown, W.Va./Dave Schultz WC) at 138.75 pounds and Kerry McCoy (State College, Pa./New York AC) at 286 pounds.
Kolat, a two-time World medalist, edged veteran Carlos Ortiz of Cuba, 4-3 in the gold medal match. Kolat was a two-time NCAA champion for Lock Haven Univ.
McCoy, who was fourth in the 1998 World Championships, pinned Gamalier Coats of the Dominican Republic in the gold-medal match. McCoy won two NCAA titles for Penn State Univ.
Kolat and McCoy were 2000 U.S. Nationals freestyle champions, and will enter as No. 1 seeds at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Dallas, Texas, June 22-24.
Five U.S. wrestlers won silver medals, dropping bouts in the gold-medal finals.
1996 Olympian Lou Rosselli (Edinboro, Pa./New York AC) lost to 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia of Cuba in the finals at 119 pounds, 3-1.
1999 World team member Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) was defeated by Yandro Quintana of Cuba in the finals at 127.75 pounds, 6-0.
1998 World team member Steve Marianetti (Urbana, Ill./New York AC) dropped a 4-0 decision at 167.5 pounds to Yosmany Romero of Cuba.
Charles Burton (Bloomington, Ind./New York AC) was pinned in the 187.25-pound finals by Matt White of Puerto Rico. White is a former NCAA Div. I All-American from Penn State Univ. and has competed for Puerto Rico in recent seasons.
1999 World team memberDominic Black (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) fell to veteran Wilfredo Morales of Cuba at 213.75 pounds, 3-0.
The United States had an outstanding semifinal round on Saturday morning, winning all six matches that they contested. The highlight came at 286 pounds, when McCoy defeated 1998 World Champion Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba. Rosselli, Kolat, Marianetti, Burton and Black also won semifinal matches, while Guerrero received a bye into the finals.
Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), who was eliminated on Friday, placed sixth at 152 pounds.
The United States won the team title with 70 points, followed by Cuba with 67 points and Canada with 51 points. The U.S. team was led by head coach Mark Manning of Lincoln, Neb. and assistant coach Zeke Jones of Morgantown, W.Va.
Held three of every four years during the non-Pan American Games years, the Pan American Championships features the best wrestlers in North, Central and South America.
