The U.S. will send its Junior World wrestling teams in men's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle to Nantes, France to compete in the FILA Junior World Championships July 3-8.
The Junior World Teams are made up of men and women ages 17 to 20 years old and must have been born between 1980-1983. The Junior level includes college underclassmen, military athletes and high school wrestlers. Both the men's freestyle and Greco-Roman teams have nine weight classes and the women's freestyle team has eight.
Each of the wrestlers representing the U.S. were champions at their weight classes at the 2000 Junior World Team Trials. Men's trials were held in Lincoln, Neb., May 11-14. Women's trials were held in Battle Creek, Mich., June 1-4.
This year's freestyle team includes four wrestlers with Junior World Championship experience. 110-pound freestyle wrestler T.J. Hill of Farmington, Mo. will defend the gold medal he won at the 1999 FILA Junior World Championships in Sydney, Australia. Hill competed for Cal. State-Fullerton in the 2000 NCAA Tournament and placed fourth.
Damion Hahn of Lakewood, N.J., at 187.25 pounds, had a fourth place finish in last year's Junior World Championships as did Tommy Rowlands of Columbus, Ohio, at 213.75 pounds. Jared Lawrence of Sandpoint, Idaho placed fifth at 152 pounds in 1999. Hahn and Lawrence both compete for the University of Minnesota. Rowlands wrestles for Ohio State University and was crowned the outstanding freestyle wrestler at the trials.
Greco-Roman wrestler Carl Fronhofer of Salem, N.Y. is the only returning member of the 1999 U.S. Junior World Team. Fronhofer, who competes at 167.5 pounds, was the Greco-Roman outstanding wrestler at the 1999 and 2000 Junior World Team Trials. Fronhofer competed but did not place at the 1999 FILA Junior World Greco-Roman Championships in Bucharest, Romania. He competes for the University of Pittsburgh and was a two-time New York prep state champion.
Sara McMann of Lock Haven, Pa. is the lone returning member of the 1999 World Team that represented the U.S. in the 1999 Junior Women's World Championships in Bucharest, Romania. McMann, who now competes at 138.75 pounds, placed sixth last year at 127.75 pounds. She also won the 2000 Senior Women's World Team Trials and will represent the U.S. at the Women's Senior World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, Sept. 1-3.
Erin Tomeo won her third consecutive national title at the 2000 FILA Junior Women's World Team Trials. She will represent the U.S. at 119 pounds. 1999 Cadet World champion Mary Kelly of Mahomet, Ill. will also represent the U.S. at 94.75 pounds.
The men's U.S freestyle team will be coached by Donnie McPherson of Portland, Ore., a coach for the Peninsula Wrestling Club, and Mike Duroe of Colorado Springs, Colo., the National Freestyle Developmental Coach for USA Wrestling. The men's Greco-Roman coaches are Dan Russell of Gresham, Ore., a coach for Team Excel and Ike Anderson of Colorado Springs, the National Greco-Roman Developmental Coach. Women's coaches are Tadaaki Hatta, of Oberlin, Ohio, a coach for the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club and Shannon Yancey, of Simi Valley, Calif., a coach for the Sunkist Kids.
The 2000 FILA Junior World Team Championships will be held at the Palais des Sports Beulieu in Nantes, France. Greco-Roman competition will be July 3-5, women's will be July 5-6 and freestyle will be held July 6-8. 2000 U.S. Junior World Teams Rosters
