Pool pairings for U.S. athletes set for the Women's World Championships

The athletes have weighed in, and the pool pairings have been set for the Women's World Wrestling Championships, to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, September 1-3. The United States is the defending World Team champions in women's wrestling.

Two of the six U.S. team members have previous World Championship experience, Tina George Wilson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 123.25 pounds and Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 149.75 pounds.

George-Wilson placed sixth in the 1999 World Championships, and also competed in the 1998 World Championships. She will face Constantina Tsimpanakou of Greece and Tatiana Lazareva of Ukraine in her pool competition.

Marano has finished second in the past four World Championships, competing at 165.25 pounds. She dropped to 149.75 pounds for the first time this year. Her draw includes Sakizligi Gamze of Turkey and Ewelina Pruszko of Poland.

Marano has also won the Pan American Championships in 1997 and was a Junior World Champion in 1998. Marano has won four career U.S. Nationals titles (1996-1999).

Four of the U.S. team members will be competing in their first World Championships. They include Clarrisa Chun (Kapolei, Hawaii/Viking WC) at 101.25 pounds, Patricia Miranda (Saratoga, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 123.25 pounds, Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 136.5 pounds and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 165.25 pounds.

In her pool, Chun will face Maria de los Angelos Barraza of Mexico, then Inga Karamchakova of Russia. Karamchakova was third in the 1998 and 1999 World Championships.

Miranda will compete against Wu Li-Chauan of Taipei and Semra Aydin of Turkey in her pool competition.

McMann has drawn Sofia Kampanari of Greece and Nikola Hartmann of Austria in her pool. Hartmann is a four-time World Champion (1993, 1994, 1995, 1998).

Smith will battle Edyta Witkowska of Poland and Yildirim Zarife of Turkey in her pool competition. Witkowska was a World bronze medalist in 1998.

Only the winners of each pool are able to advance to the championship bracket and compete for a medal. If an athlete does not win her pool competition, she will not be eligible for a medal.
