Former Cyclone Wrestlers Named To Olympic Team Coaching Staff

FORMER CYCLONE WRESTLERS NAMED TO OLYMPIC TEAM COACHING Two former Cyclone standout matmen Kevin Jackson and Steve Knight have recently been named to the US Olympic Freestyle Coaching Staff in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Both Knight and Jackson wrestled for Iowa State in the late 1980's and later went on to be assistant coaches under Head Coach Jim Gibbons. Jackson finished his grappling career with the Cyclones as an All American and NCAA Runnerup in 1987, helping Iowa State to claim the 1987 NCAA title. Knight finished his career as an NCAA All American in 1988. Both left assistant coaching positions at Iowa State in the early 1990's to pursue Olympic dreams of their own.

After all things were said and done for Kevin Jackson, he won the Pan American Championship and World Championship in 1991, he then was crowned the 1992 Olympic Gold medallist at 180.5lbs. and later came back one more time to win another World title for the United States at the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. After a stint with Ultimate Fighting for a few years, Jackson was named the Resident Freestyle Coach at the US Olympic Training Center in ColoradoSprings, early summer of 1998.

As far as Steve Knight, he too, went on in pursuit of Olympic goals. Knight won the Pan American Gold medal in 1992 and then went on to the 1992 Barcelona Games as an alternate and training partner for two time Olympic Gold medallist, Oklahoma State coach and current Head Coach for the 2000 Olympic Games, John Smith. John Smith is joined as Olympic head coach by legendary Iowa coach Dan Gable and current Lehigh University coach, Greg Strobel.
