Josh Asper (Parkton, Md./University of Maryland) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for November 9-15.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Asper was named Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 165-pound title on Saturday at the Brockport Oklahoma Gold Classic in Brockport, N.Y.

Asper, a sophomore who is ranked No. 5 nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, scored bonus points in all four of his wins. He started his championship run with a 19-4 technical fall over American's Tanner Shaffer. He followed by defeating Jake Vetter of Army 12-2 and then Chase Nelson of Oklahoma 17-8. In the finals, Asper handled No. 7 Scott Winston of Rutgers by an 11-3 score.

Asper reached the round of 12 at the 2010 NCAA Championships.

He will meet Wyoming’s Shane Onufer in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Sunday in Fresno, Calif.

Asper placed second at the 2008 Junior Nationals in freestyle.
