Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for June 8-14.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Lampe won the 48 kg/105.5 lbs. title at the World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Saturday, June 12. She qualifies to compete in the World Wrestling Championships, which will be held in Moscow, Russia in September. It will be Lampe’s first Senior World Team.
Lampe defeated 2008 World champion and 2008 Olympian Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the best-of-three Championship Series, two matches to one. Lampe placed second behind Chun in the World Team Trials the last two years.
Chun won the first match of the series, 3-2, 1-0. Lampe came back in match two with a clutch 2-1, 4-1 victory. In the third and deciding match, Lampe stopped Chun in three periods, 1-0, 0-1, 3-1.
Lampe was a 2010 U.S. Open champion. (Chun did not compete in the U.S. Open).
Lampe as also a 2010 University Nationals champion. She was a 2007 Junior World bronze medalist. She has also won Junior Nationals and FILA Cadet Nationals titles. Lampe is originally from Tomahawk, Wis., where she placed second in the state high school meet competing against boys.
