Iowa's Jay Borschel named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for March 16-22

Jay Borschel (Marion, Iowa/University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for March 16-22.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

The second-seeded Borschel knocked off top-ranked and previously unbeaten Mack Lewnes of Cornell 6-2 in the 174-pound finals of the NCAA Championships on March 20 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.

Borschel shot in for takedowns in the first and third periods, and piled up a whopping 3 minutes, 46 seconds of riding time.

Borschel, a senior, finished the season a spotless 37-0. Lewnes, who had not allowed an offensive point all season, dropped his first bout of the season.

Borschel also turned in the signature match for team champion Iowa in the semifinals. He rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 8-2 in an improbable 10-9 win over No. 3 seed Chris Henrich of Virginia.

Borschel tied the match with just under a minute left and then rode Henrich out, picking up a point of riding time to win the match.

Borschel finishing third at the 2008 NCAA Championships before falling short of placing last year. He was a member of three straight national championship teams for the Hawkeyes.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
