CSU-Pueblo tops Oklahoma City 20-15 in battle of fledgling programs

Pueblo, Colo. - Three years ago, Archie Randall and Dax Charles wouldn't have been coaching against one another in a college dual meet. But three years ago, neither Oklahoma City University or Colorado State-Pueblo had varsity wrestling programs.

The score was less important on Wednesday night at Massari Arena in Pueblo as Charles the host ThunderWolves topped Randall and the visiting Stars 20-15. The importanace of the dual was the revival of one program -- CSU-Pueblo and the continue acceleration of another.

CSU-Pueblo, formerly known as the University of Southern Colorado, jumped out to a quick lead, winning the first four bouts from 165-197. After an opening decision by the ThunderWolves' Quinn Donnell at 165, Justin Grant picked up a dominating 11-0 major decision at 174 pounds over OCU's Cole Nelson.

Kellen Desmond extended the lead for the hosts with a 9-6 victory over Andrew Martinez at 184, followed by Tony Chavarria holding off a late flurry from OCU's Jake Mabry to escape with a 13-12 win at 197 pounds.

Corey Johnson would answer for OCU, winning a sluggish 3-1 decision in sudden victory over CSU-Pueblo's Moises Acala.

One of the night's most anticipated and exciting bouts ended prematurely, as OCU's Kidd Gomez picked up an injury default over CSU-Pueblo freshman Treven Delaune. The two traded slick offensive attacks before Delaune dislocated his elbow at the end of a scramble won by Gomez.

Delaune, fresh off a championship at last week's Northern Colorado Open where he defeated former Junoir Freestyle National Champion Tony Mustari of UNC, was unable to continue and OCU got within 13-9, but it would get no closer.

The ThunderWolves would ice the dual with two more wins at 133 and 141 to build a 20-9 lead with two bouts to go. OCU's Will Shelton and Nikolas Turner picked up the dual's last two bouts at 149 and 157, but it didn't provide the bonus points needed for OCU to steal away a victory.
