Penn State Wrestling signs three in late period; State champions Driscoll, Edwards & Woodruff join L

University Park, Pa., April 26, 2001 - Penn State head wrestling coach Troy Sunderland announced today the inking of three recruits during the late signing period which began April 11. Joining the Nittany Lions next season will be 135-pound PIAA Champion DeWitt Driscoll of Connellsville, Pa., (Connellsville Area High),189-pound PIAA Champion Joel Edwards of Upper Darby, Pa. (Upper Darby High) and 145-pound Ohio State champion Aaron Woodruff of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (Welsh Jesuit High). They will join early signee and 119-pound PIAA Champion Adam Smith (Newport, Pa.) in the Lion's 2001 recruiting class to date. Driscoll, who is expected to wrestle at 133 pounds for Penn State, is a two-time PIAA class AAA place winner who also finished third in 2000. He was impressive at this year's Dapper Dan Classic in Pittsburgh, pinning three-time New Jersey state champion Mark Manchio in the second period and earning Outstanding Wrestler honors. He compiled a 141-23 career record with 97 pins at Connelsville Area High, including a 42-2 mark last year. At the 2000 AAU Grand National Championships he won the freestyle tournament and place third in Greco-Roman. He also finished third at the 2000 Sombo AAU Grand Nationals and this season won the Powerade Tournament and was third at the Beast of the East. "We were really impressed with DeWitt's intense, wide open style of going out and getting in peoples faces," Sunderland said. "He uses his conditioning to break opponents and falls right in with what were trying to bring to this team. He'll be fun for the fans to watch." Edwards, who is expected to wrestle at 197 pounds for Penn State, was also a two-time PIAA class AAA place winner, taking home eighth in 2000 and winning the title in his senior year. He compiled a 121-23 career record at Upper Darby High, including going 44-3 in his senior season and earning district Wrestler of the Year honors. He allowed only two takedowns against him all season. Edwards placed eighth at the High School Nationals and second at the Beast of the East and earned All-America honors and a No. 7 national ranking. At the 2001 Dapper Dan Classic he downed No. 1 ranked Jake Rosholt by injury default, he was leading 4-2 at the time. "We're looking for Joel to be a solid 197-pounder for us," Sunderland said. "He is very good on the mat and on his feet and has a great college style. Woodruff, who is expected to wrestle at 141 pounds for Penn State, was a two-time Ohio state place winner, finishing third in his junior year. He posted a 125-48 career record and went 39-3 in his senior campaign. He won titles at the Powerade and Top Gun tournaments this year and finished third at the Ironman. "Aaron is a solid wrestler in all three positions," Sunderland said. "He comes out of a traditionally strong program at Walsh-Jesuit and can be a strong and dominating 141-pounder." "With the exception of 165, I feel we met the current needs of the program with great kids who had had a lot of success on the high school level," Sunderland said. "They are a great fit for our program and I think they will have great success at the college level."
