Media credentials now available for Grappling World Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Dec. 12-13

The media credentials application for the 2009 Grappling World Championships is now available for members of the press who wish to cover the event.

The preliminary deadline to submit the media application is December 1.

Fort Lauderdale will host the event with the world’s best grapplers coming from all over the globe. Competition in No-Gi Grappling will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12 and the Gi Grappling competition is set for Sunday, Dec. 13.

This is only the second Grappling World Championships hosted by FILA, the international wrestling federation. The 2008 Championships were hosted in Lucerne, Switzerland, last December.

Nations that have registered to participate in the championships are Austria, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, and the United States.

The United States team was determined at the Grappling World Team Trials in Phoenix, Ariz. in late October. The final roster, which included some entries added via petition, was released a week ago. For information on the 2009 U.S. Grappling World Team, visit:

USA Wrestling has not hosted a World Championship event since 2003 when New York and Madison Square Garden hosted the Freestyle World Championships.
