Jake Herbert named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 15-22

Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 15-22.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Herbert won a silver medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. in men's freestyle at the World Wrestling Championships in Herning, Denmark on Sept. 22. It was Herbert's first Senior World Championships.

Herbert won four matches against outstanding opponents to reach the gold-medal finals.

Herbert opened with a third-period injuy default win over David Bichinashvili of Georgia. He followed with three period wins over Sharip Sharipov of Azerbaijan and Gokhan Yavaser of Turkey.

In the semifinals, Herbert outlasted Junior World champion Abdusalam Gadisov of Russia 0-4, 2-2, 1-0.

In the finals, Herbert dropped a close match to Zaurbek Sokhiev of Uzbekistan, 0-1, 0-1.

Herbert won both the U.S. Nationals and World Team Trials this year. He completed his college career at Northwestern this season, winning his second NCAA title and winning the Hodge Trophy as the nation's top college wrestler. He is a past University World medalist. Herbert was a prep star for North Allegheny High School in Pennsylvania.
