Miller named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for August 25 - Sept. 1

Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for August 25-September 1.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Miller claimed a bronze medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. at the Beijing Olympic Games in women's freestyle wrestling, the only U.S. women's wrestler to win a medal in 2008.

She becomes the first African-American women's wrestler to win an Olympic medal, and only the third U.S. women's wrestler to claim an Olympic medal in history.

Miller defeated three-time World bronze medalist Martine Dugrenier of Canada 1-0, 1-2, 1-1 in the bronze medal match. Miller won her first two matches, before dropping a quarterfinal match to 2004 Olympic champion, and ultimately the 2008 champion, Kaori Icho of Japan. She battled back with a clutch win in the repechage round to earn a spot in the bronze-medal match.

Since the Olympic Games, Miller has appeared at the Fuel the Dream post-Olympic celebration in New Jersey, conducted a number of interviews in New York City, and appeared with fellow U.S. Olympic medalists on the Oprah Show.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
