Women’s freestyle gets right back to work

While the end of the Olympic Games means rest and time off for many athletes, the women’s freestyle wrestling program is already back on the mats.

U.S. National Coach Terry Steiner scheduled practice starting Monday, August 25 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. as the women’s program begins preparing for the World Championships.

“We are just getting back into it in practice,” said Steiner. “We’re focused on getting the feeling back and not concentrated so much on the technical aspect this week.”

Two U.S. Olympic Trials runners-up took part in practice Monday morning: Katie Downing, who competed at 72 kg/158.5 lbs and traveled to Beijing as a training partner for Randi Miller, and Sally Roberts, who was second at 55 kg/121 lbs.

“For these athletes, no one was on the Olympic team,” said Steiner. “For them, it’s their shot to get a World medal.”

The official World Team Trials training camp begins Tuesday, September 1, but athletes and coaches alike are already gearing up.

The USA Wrestling World Team Trials for women’s freestyle is set to take place September 19-20 in Colorado Springs, Colo. and will determine the team taking part in the World Championships.

The registration deadline for the World Team Trials has been extended to Wednesday, August 27 at 12 p.m. MST. The cost of registration is $25. To register visit TrackWrestling.com.

Steiner expects Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller to take part in the World Team Trials. Miller may have the edge, but many other of the weight classes are up in the air, depending on who decides to try out.

The World Championships are being held in the seven women’s freestyle weights, because only four weights were contested at the Olympic Games for women.

The 2008 Senior World Championships for women's freestyle will be held October 11-13, in Tokyo, Japan.
