Reece Humphrey named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 20-26

Reece Humphrey (Indianapolis, Ind./Ohio State University) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 20-26.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Humphrey outlasted Iowa's Daniel Dennis in the freestyle finals at 60 kg/132 lbs. to win the University World Team Trials on May 23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Dennis won the first match 1-0, 3-0 and Humphrey won the second match 1-0, 4-4. In the deciding third match, Humphrey won, 6-1, 4-1. Humphrey is the son of Jim Humphrey, head coach of the 1988 U.S. Olympic freestyle team and a past World medalist.

Reece Humphrey earlier knocked off Michigan State All-American Franklin Gomez 1-0, 1-0 in the finals of the Challenge Tournament. That put Humphrey in the best-of-3 finals series against Dennis.

Humphrey now advances to the World University Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece, on July 9-13.

Humphrey went 3-2 for Ohio State at the 2008 NCAA Championships in St. Louis. He fell one win short of All-American honors at 133 pounds during his sophomore season. The Buckeyes placed second at the 2008 NCAA tournament.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
