Lundell named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 4-10

Ricky Lundell (Orem, Utah/Pedro Sauer Team) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Sept. 4-Sept.10.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Lundell won four matches on the way to the gold medal at 70 kg/154 lbs. at the historic first FILA World Grappling Championships, held in Antalya, Turkey, Sept. 9.

He was one of nine individual champions from the United States, which swept all of the gold medals and a majority of the medals awarded with a dominant team performance.

Lundell dominated his opponents, scoring two submissions, a lopsided victory and a disqualification. He opened the tournament with a 14-0 decision over Gerardo Dudamell of Venezuela, 14-0. He won winning handily when his second opponent, Jean-Baptist Lemerle of France was disqualified at 1:10. In the semifinals, Lundell scored a quick submission over Lautaro Arborel of Spain in 38 seconds.

In the championship finals, Lundell secured another victory by submission, defeating John Irlkaranagh of Ireland in 2:35.

U.S. World Team Coaches Bob Anderson and Jason Townsend praised Lundell for his skills and leadership during the historic training camp hosted at the USA Wrestling National Training Center for Grappling and Sombo, at the No Limits Mixed Martial Arts facility in Irvine, Calif., which was held during the week prior to the World Championships.

Lundell qualified for the U.S. World Grappling Team by winning the 70 kg/154 lbs. division at the U.S. Grappling World Team Trials in Las Vegas, Nev. in June.
