Derrick Yant named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 8-14

Derrick Yant (Delta, Ohio/Delta High School) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 8-14.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Yant won 171-pound titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman at the Central Junior Regional Championships on May 12-13 in Indianapolis. Yant won by fall in the Greco-Roman finals and won by injury default in the freestyle finals.

Yant, who is unbeaten in Greco-Roman competition this year, won FILA Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman last month in Akron, Ohio.

Yant is a junior at Delta (Ohio) High School. He placed fourth in the Ohio state high school tournament at 160 this year after placing eighth at 145 in 2006.

Yant was a Cadet Greco-Roman and freestyle state champion last year before he placed eighth at Cadet Nationals last summer in Fargo, N.D. Yant had a combined 102-6 record last year in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
